Three weeks in hospital, five months of medical delay, and a silence that still hurts.
I am writing to share my serious concern about the way my mother’s care has been handled under the Neurology Consultant Team on the 5th Floor.
My mother has been in hospital for around three weeks, and during this time it has become clear that there has been a long-standing failure in her medical management.
She was supposed to have the stent in her kidney removed months ago, but this important procedure was delayed for almost five to six months before her admission. This delay was a serious mistake, yet the hospital seems unwilling to take responsibility for it.
Since being admitted, her condition has become more complicated, but instead of providing more medical attention, the team seems to have gradually stepped back. Over the past week, her situation has worsened, and there has been very little proactive care or communication from the consultant team.
When we expressed our concerns, we were told that no further tests would be carried out and that she might be discharged home even though her condition remains unstable.
The consultant’s reasoning was that if further tests were done, they might lead to additional treatments — and that the hospital “was not the right place for her” because of her age.
This explanation was extremely distressing for us as a family.
It gave the impression that, because she is elderly, her treatment should be left incomplete and that her care no longer matters. This approach feels deeply unethical and unacceptable.
Every patient, regardless of age, deserves full and equal medical care, respect, and dignity. The NHS should never allow a situation where elderly patients are denied proper treatment or discharged while still unwell.
I sincerely hope the hospital management will review this case in full, investigate the delay of five to six months in removing the kidney stent, and address the decision-making process of the Neurology Consultant Team that led to such neglect.
Families should not have to fight to ensure their loved ones are properly treated and respected.
Please take this feedback seriously and ensure no other elderly patient experiences the same disregard.
I am happy to provide more details privately if needed.
